11-20: Matty Ices the Titans

First off let me say, Happy Thanksgiving to all. Hope you all ate good and enjoyed time with your family, friends and loved ones. Also I hope you enjoyed the Thanksgiving Day games aired on FOX, CBS, and NFL Network. I'm thankful for all of you who spend time reading this blog and sending me your feedback through twitter and the comment section at the bottom, without you all none of this would be possible and I thank you for your support. Now that that's out of the way, let’s talk about the Atlanta Falcons. Coming into this game against the Titans, Atlanta had just lost an important game for against the Saints which would have placed Atlanta in first place in the NFC South, who what better to have than to have a team that's having a rough season come into your house for you to beat on and build that confidence back up. Sounds like an ideal situation to me. With that said its time for a RECAP!

Recap

Tennessee wins the coin toss and receives the kick off backed up on their own 7 yard line. Atlanta forces a quick 3 and out and gets the ball into the hands of the offense after the Titans punter boots the ball an amazing.... 34 yards to the Tennessee 44 yard line. 2nd and 10 Turner takes the hand off around the left side for 15 yards down to the 29, but on the next play Will Svitek is flagged for holding and puts Atlanta into a 1st and 20. 1st and 20 Matt Ryan finds Tony Gonzalez over the middle for 9 yards to the 30. 2nd and 11 he finds Tony over the middle again for 13 yards down to the 17 and a first down into the red zone. 1st and 10 from the 17, why not throw it to Tony it worked the first two time, this time is no different. 17 yard TOUCHDOWN TONY GONZALEZ!!!! The 95th of his 15 year career and 19th as an Atlanta Falcon. (7-0).

After the defense gives up the quick score, the Titans offense comes back onto the fields hoping for a different result after going 3rd and out in less than a minute and forty seconds. 1st and 10 Chris Johnson runs right for a pick up of two yards before being tackled by Curtis Lofton, who is tied for 6th in the NFL with 91 tackles on the season. If Lofton doesn't make the pro bowl this season the voting has to be fixed he is having an amazing season at middle linebacker. Second and 8 from 23, the other QB from BC, Matt Hasselbeck throws the pass deep for Nate Washington who hauls it in for a 25 yard completion, but wait it can’t be... IT IS, a flag on the play. HOLDING on the offense the play does not count. A few plays later 1st and ten Johnson tries to carry the ball off the left tackle but is flattened by Babineaux in the backfield for a loss of 4 yards. 2 &14 Hasselbeck throws a pass right looking for Lavelle Hawkins, instead he finds DUNTA ROBINSON!!! NAW THAT'S NOT A TYPO I SAID DUNTA ROBINSON WITH THE INTERCEPTION! He takes the ball 14 yards down to the Titans 44 yard line. Which translates into a 12 plays later, into a 19 yard field goal and a 10 point lead for the Atlanta Falcons. (10-0)

Titans have been forced to punt and have been intercepted on their first two possessions and unfortunately for Tennessee the third possession didn't go any better, this drive went for 6 plays and 13 yards and resulted in a punt. However this time the punt did go 57 yards and Atlanta was forced to start their drive on their side of the field for the first time in the game, but they wouldn't be their long. 1st and 10 Matt Ryan finds lasts weeks player of the game Harry Douglas for a 21 yard completion over the middle to the 42 yard line. Two plays later Turner runs left for a pickup of 35 yards pushed out of bounds by Cortland Finnegan at the 17. 3rd down and 15 after a offensive pass interference call on Eric Weems, Matt throws to Weems for a pickup of 7 and here comes Matt Bryant to kick the 33 yard field goal. After Tennessee and Atlanta swaps possessions the Titans add a field goal (13-3) just before the half.

Into the 3rd Quarter, Atlanta gets the ball on their own 20. 2nd and 6 Matt finds Tony for a gain of 16 and a first down. 3rd down, after two passes fall incomplete both intended for Roddy White, Ryan looks for Tony who is interfered with by Finnegan. AUTOMATIC FIRST DOWN!. 1st and 10 from the 45, Ryan goes DEEEEEEEEEEP down the right side for RODDY WHITE who makes the over the shoulder catch between two defenders pushed out of bounds by Jordan Babineaux, younger brother of Jonathan Babineaux. 43 yard completion down to the 12 yard line. Three plays later Turner takes the ball 4 yards and into the end zone for the TOUCHDOWN. (20-3) Atlanta is starting to look like they can’t be stopped moving the ball 80 yards in just 7 plays in just over 3 minutes. Not only is the offense clicking but the Falcons defense has done no wrong, and forced another Titan punt and the offense added another field goal extending the lead (23-3)

Down by 20 points on the road late in the 3rd, and Matt Hasselbeck is injured so who do you turn to? JAKE LOCKER ladies and gentlemen, 1st and 10 Locker looks for pass intended for Damian Williams falls incomplete. 2nd and 10 Locker goes to Jared... He went to Jared.. Jared Cook for an 8 yard gain down to the 40. Now I don't know if the defense took a play off because its a rookie QB or they expected the Titans to run the ball in the short yard age situation, or maybe it was just bad coverage in the secondary who knows but on 3rd down and 2 Locker finds Nate Washington, Washington shakes free of the defender and finds the end zone for a Titan touchdown and the first of Lockers career. (23-10)

After the two again exchange punts, Atlanta starts the drive on the 36 yard line. 2nd and 10 Ryan finds White for a 24 yard completion to the 40 yard line. 2nd and 11 Matt finds Tony Gonzalez for a 19 yard reception and the Falcons appear to be marching down the field for the kill shot early into the 4th already up by 13. A few plays later its 4th and 1. Defense jumps off side first down! 2nd and 10 from the 7 of Tennessee Turner takes the hand off around the left side and... FUMBLES THE FOOTBALL…. recovered by Tennessee and returned to the 16. Titans 3rd and 10 Locker in shotgun scans the field and takes off for an 11 yard scramble to the 49. 1st and 10 Locker drops back.... SACK!!! John Abraham comes through in the clutch for the defense. Two incompletions later 4th and 17 Locker... goes to Jared, He went to Jared.... Jared for a 22 yard gain to keep the drive going. 5 plays later Locker finds Nate Washington for the 4 yard score. (23-17) Atlanta, not looking to blow the lead and lose the game receives the kick off at the 20. Turner, fresh of the fumble takes the ball off the right side for a 27 yard gain. Time out Titans. 1st and 10 Snelling gains 2 yards to keep the clock rolling.. Time out Titans. 2nd and 8, Snelling again goes for two yards and the Titans burn their final time out. This is it... 3rd and 6 up by 6 Matt Ryan drops back and finds Harry Douglas for the 6 yard completion.. FIRST DOWN... BALL GAME!! FALCONS WIN!!! 23-17

Offense

Some weeks the defense is going to have to win it for you and other weeks the offense is going to have to make plays at the end of the game to secure the victory. This was one of those weeks. The offense played fairly well this week against the Titans defense, the moved the ball for the most part up and down the field all day. In the beginning of the season the Falcons offense could not move the ball well and many people wondered why Atlanta didn't use the no huddle offense more instead of just using it to jump start the offense and establish a tempo. Well against the Titans, Atlanta ran the no huddle for most of the game and it did almost what most fans thought it would, keep the defense off balance and make the offense seem more dynamic which worked as well as anyone could have expected and Matt Ryan did a great job in getting the team in the right play for the right situation and at times channeled his inner Payton.

While they moved the ball well the no huddle however did not help the teams red zone percentage as the only scored twice in the red zone out of 6 attempts. Last week I noted on my twitter account @MrShields2 and in my post on We Dat Nation that Matt Ryan is 30-35 throw a game quarterback and apparently he knows it also, calling his own plays for much of the game Ryan called 32 pass plays and completed 22 of them for 316 yards which is 9.9 yards per throw. That’s playing to your strengths and it payed off really well for the Falcons, so much so that the Vikings (Atlanta's next opponent) has spent extensive time at practice attempting to prepare for the Falcons no huddle package.

Also last week I was rather critical on where Roddy White had been this season, apparently he reads my blog or knew he needed to step up and be the all pro receiver he had been in years past because Roddy went off, catching 7 balls for 147 yards including a spectacular 43 yard catch between two defenders, but he can’t have all the credit because Matt threw a beautiful ball that was placed perfectly. Ryan called the game so well it just leaves me wondering why hasn't they been allowing Matt to do this sooner. Every year a team finds new that gives them an edge heading into the playoffs, in 2009 the Saints Defense was a force and it carried a high powered offense to the Championship. 2010 the Packers took the playoffs by storm with a new found running game and it ran the Packers right into the Superbowl. Could the missing element this year be Atlanta's use of the no huddle?

Offensive Notables Player of the Week

Not only did Matt Ryan call the plays, he managed the game. Everybody knows that Atlanta is built on running the Football, and so does Matt. Atlanta ran the ball 36 times for 116 yards led by Turner with 100 yards on 21 carries 4.8 per and 1 touchdown. Tony Gonzalez had 5 catches for 74 yards and a touchdown and last week’s MVP Harry Douglas came up with 4 catches for 51 yards of his own. The Falcons offense 10th in the NFL with passing yards and 10th in rushing according to ESPN. This offense is moving right along as this team pushes toward the playoffs. The team played so well this week I got a special gift for yall, not one.. but TWO players of the week!

Player of the Week: Matt Ryan- 22 of 32 for 316 yards 1 TD no INTs. Not to mention he called the game and had the offense rolling.

Player of the Week: Roddy White- 7 Catches 147 yards 21.0 per catch 0 TDs. Hopefully this was the breakout performance that fans have been waiting for.

Defense

The defense played well, until Jake Locker came in. When your offense has a 20 point lead all you can ask from your defense to do is not blow it, although they did hold to the lead I'm sure many fans couldn't help but sit and hold onto their chairs after Locker, a Rookie QB came into the game and threw 2 touchdowns. Before Locker however, The Falcons defense held the Titans QB to 124 yards and forced him into throwing the ball to Dunta Robinson.  Also After rushing for a season high 130 yards last week, Chris Johnson was held to just 13 yards on 12 carries. No he didn't get injured during the game but few people realize that the Falcons are ranked number 2 as the second best rush defense in the NFL only allowing the Titans 41 yards on 14 carries. That’s 2.9 yards per carry for all my math majors out there.

This week however Atlanta again allowed too many 3rd down conversions 8 of 14 to be exact and a 4th down conversion on a 4th and 17. While Atlanta is ranked 2nd in rush defense they are in the lower half of the league in stopping the pass and will have to work on that if they are planning to make a push into the playoffs and hopefully the Superbowl.

Defensive Notables and Players of the Week

BREAKING NEWS!!! Neither Curtis Lofton nor Sean Weatherspoon led the team in tackles it was Chris Owens, who was filling in for Kelvin Hayden. Chris Owens led the team with 7 tackles, if you remember a few weeks ago I said if a DB lead the team in tackles that either means the front 7 aren't doing their job or the DB is getting beat like he stole something, I’m not going to call out Owens but I will congratulate the front 7 on playing a solid game. Curtis Lofton did have 6 tackles and is tied for 6th in the NFL, while I was looking at stats for tackles I did notice that 2 or 3 players in front of Lofton played on Thanksgiving so come Sunday the he should have jumped over a few other players on the list. Babineaux played well and on one drive Bab had taken over for the defense batting down two passes and forcing a punt, not too bad when you’re playing against your little brother while your mom is sporting a two sided jersey to support her sons as they play on the same field.

Player of the Week: Jonathan Babineaux- 3 tackles 2 Tackles for loss 2 Pass deflections and 2 QB hits. That’s how you show out against you brothers team.

Player of the Week: Dunta Robinson- 3 Tackles 3 pass deflections and 1 Amazing Interception. Dunta has not gotten many interceptions as a Falcon but this one was his best and his best effort to get it.

Preview

This week the Falcons are facing the Minnesota Vikings and possibly without their all star running back Adrian Peterson, who hurt his ankle in last week in a losing effort to the Raiders. All though the Vikings maybe missing Peterson, Minnesota has use WR Percy Harvin as a Running back and also Toby Gerhart can pack a punch as well. This will be the first time Mike Smith has faced one of his former coaches as Bill Musgrave was hired as OC for the Vikings during the off season.  Musgrave spent his career developing you QBs like Payton Manning in 98 and Matt Ryan in 2008 and now he has Christian Ponder. Also this game will feature Mike Jenkins returning to Atlanta as a Viking and Ray Edwards will play against Minnesota as a Falcon which should add an extra element to this battle in the Dome. In order to win the offensive line will need to keep Ryan up right and allow the offense to score fast to put the Vikings away early to cruise to a victory.

11-13: Saints March on Falcons Streaks

Good Saturday Morning. It took a while to get this post up, because it’s always hard to write about a loss, but its harder to write about a loss to a division rival that you should have beaten. But being that its 5 days before Thanksgiving as a Atlanta fan I'm just looking forward to being able to see another game and not having to take this loss into a bye week or an extended week.

RECAP

We open things up on Atlanta first possession of the game. In last week’s post and preview I made a point to note that Michael Turner only played 3 quarters and should translate to a lot of Turner and early in the game against the Saints, well turns out I was right. The first play from scrimmage was a pass to Turner, unfortunately it fell incomplete but on the second play big 33 took the ball off the left side and rumbles for 14 yards for a Falcons FIRST DOWN!!! But apparently "Rowdy" Roddy White was to Rowdy because he drew an UNNECESSARY ROUGHNESS flag which pushed the offense back inside their own 20 yard line. Five plays later Turner catches the ball for 10 yard gain and runs out of bounds at the Falcons 43. Two plays after that Turner off the right side, 14 yards into Saints territory. 1st and 10 at the Saints 39 Ryan looks for his big play guy JULIO JONES, it appears that Tracy Porter watched the Falcons game last week and doesn't want to be the next DB on the Rookies highlight reel because he interferes with Jones and is flagged for the 15 yard infraction. Few plays later, 1st and 10 down inside the Red Zone against one of the worst red zone defenses in the NFL, Ryan drops back and looks for his sure handed Tight End... Incomplete! 2nd and 10 Turner tries the right side.... Stopped in the back field for a loss of 1.  3rd and 16 Ryan in the Shotgun looks for Rodgers out of the back field and it too falls incomplete and the Falcons are forced to kick a field goal after the 16 play drive comes to a screeching halt. (3-3)

These are two completely different offenses, which makes this one of the best rivalries in the NFL. When you get two teams, one that hangs its hat on running the football and the other with the drop back passer QB who loves to air it out to a plethora of different receivers, on the same field you are absolutely in for a treat every time these teams get together. That being said, on New Orleans first possession of the game, 1st and 10 Drew Brees drops back and hits David Thomas for an 8 yard completion. On the next play of the drive, this is where the difference of the two teams comes into play; Drew Brees goes DEEP for Lance Moore and falls incomplete. As a Falcons fan I am more than comfortable to say that the Falcons haven't went deep that early in a game since 2008 when Matt Ryan threw his fist pass for a 70 yard touchdown, Atlanta rather run the football take dink and dunk passes and just when they have bored you to sleep almost the take that shot to say HEY! We can do it all too, all be it not as exciting to watch, it has proven to be rather affective over the last 3 seasons. Anyway back to the Saints (BOOOOO) two plays after incompletion, Brees links up with Marques Colston for 10 yards to keep the chains moving. After two running plays net 3 yards, Brees looks for his normally sure handed Tight End Jimmy Graham (who is quickly becoming one of the best tight ends in the NFL and the second best in the NFC South) but this time his hands aren't that sure because he drops the pass.... 4th down! Two different offenses, same result..... A Stalled drive and a field goal... (3-3)

Into the 2nd quarter we go, after the Saints Punter whiffs on a punt that goes about 30 yards from the New Orleans 12. Pro Bowl Returner Eric Weems and presumably good friend of Roddy White, adds 15 yards to the punt after picking up Atlanta's second UNNECESSARY ROUGHNESS Penalty of the game and let’s just say Coach Smith gave Eric a few choice words on the sidelines after the bone head play took Atlanta out of Saints territory. Remember when previously I told you that Atlanta uses the run to bore the defense to sleep? Well on their first play the Falcons woke the defense up with at 17 yard pass to Roddy White down the right side. Three plays later Ryan finds Julio Jones for a 6 yard completion and a first down. Then enter Jacquizz Rodgers, a little guy that when he gets the rock he knows what to do with it. He takes the hand off 13 yards down to the Saints 16 yard line. Two plays after that Matt Ryan looks for Julio Jones to pick up the first down and it’s.... INCOMPLETE and the Falcon send on Automatic Matt Bryant for the 29 yarder. (6-3) Falcons up and we are all happy but the story that goes untold is that the Saints.... The same Saints who probably couldn't stop a little league team from scoring in the red zone has stop Atlanta not once but twice.

After New Orleans and Atlanta swap punts, The Aints Saints have the ball on the 50 yard line. First and 10 Drew Brees finds Jimmy Graham wide open down the left side line for a 29 yard completion moving the ball down to the Falcons 29 yard line. Now I'm no expert nor have I ever claimed to be... BUT I'm just guessing that when the Falcons called those to defensive plays I don't think the play was covering everyone except Tony Gonzalez Jr. So that leaves me to speculate that either that play action that the Saint used (with no running game) was every affective OR that was a HUGE blown coverage by Thomas DeCoud who was extremely late coming from his safety position to cover the tight end who ran clean across the formation basically untouched. Oh well can’t change it now but let’s hope it doesn't happen again. On the next play, wouldn't you know it... Brees throws a 21 touchdown to the none other than Graham, who dare I say it, again left WIDE OPEN!!!! This time leaving 3 Falcons defenders standing at the 10 yard line looking at each other wondering what many fans were screaming at their televisions....Who was suppose to cover him? Two plays.... 50 Yards. AYE, Somebody tell that young man to not hang on the goal post after the dunk. Anyway Touchdown Aints (6-10). I have no idea why my keyboard keeps doing that... Oh Well, IT’S HALFTIME!!!

As we move right along into the 3rd quarter after the Falcons defense forces a Saints Punt. 3rd and 10, in the shotgun Matt Ryan finds Harry Douglas for a 12 yard completion up to the Falcons 42 yard line. Two plays later it Turner around the left side for the 24 yard pick up to the Saints 35. 4 plays later from the 26, Atlanta who has been turned away twice this game while knocking at the red zone door goes for it on 4 and 1 and Turner rams the ball behind the left guard for a pickup of 5 yards. 1st and 10 from the Saints 21 yard line, Ryan under center, with two tight ends and receiver against the saints 9 defenders in the box, fakes the hand off to Snelling, avoids the rush and dumps the ball off to Snelling at the 20 yard line who runs to the 10, smashes one Saint, spins past another, Stiff arms another, and carries 3 more into the end zone... as Chris Berman would say... He's "Rumblin, Stumblin, Bumblin" into the end zone for the 21 yard ATLANTA TOUCHDOWN!!! (13-10)

New Orleans next possession, HERE COME THE AINTS SAINTS. 1st and 10 from the 18 Drew Brees links up with Colston for a 15 yard gain. 3 plays later, in the shotgun Brees finds  Colston again for 19 yards down to the Atlanta 41. Two player later Brees fires a ball DEEP for..... ROBERT MEACHEM. Got cha, thought I was going to say Colston didn't you? Robert Meachem for the 33 Yard Catch and the 33 yard touchdown, good things about that is, at least he wasn't left completely wide open, there is just no defense for a perfect throw. 7 plays 77 yards 3:37 drive... Thats what you call a quick strike offense. (13-17).

Early in the 4th, after a pass bogus interference call on Roddy calls back a 11 yard completion to Tony Gonzalez. 2nd and 19 Roddy decides he wants to play DB as a ball bounces off his hands and into the hands of Saints Linebacker Scott Shanle who returns it 12 yards to the ATL 26. Thanks to the defense, Atlanta only gives up a field goal and gives the ball back to the offense with only about 3 minutes gone from the clock. Unfortunately the Offense isn't able to do much and was forced to punt the ball back to the Saints offense that adds another 3 points and ate more time off the clock (13-23). With 7:13 on the clock down by 10, enter the Falcons offense. First and 10 Ryan hits Gonzalez over the middle for 18 yards, two plays later is Ryan to Weems for 9 yards and a first down. Three plays after a time out is fourth and 3, Ryan finds Roddy for a 6 yard gain to keep the drive going. Next play Ryan again connects with White for 19 yards and is pushed out of bounds at the New Orleans 20. 1st and 20 after being turned away in the Red Zone twice this game Matt, say NO MORE! Shot gun formation for Ryan, and he throws it to Tony G for the 20 yard reception and TOUCHDOWN!!!. (20-23)

Falcon’s defense forces a punt and Atlanta has the ball with 1:55. If you have been following this rivalry what other way would you want to have it other than the team down having the ball will less than two minutes left with a chance to win it. That makes for exciting football. Any first and 10 from the 6 yard line Matt Ryan to Harry Douglas for 23 yards. Next play 1st and 10, it worked so good the first time why not do it again.. Matt Ryan to Harry Douglas for 23 yards into New Orleans territory. After an incompletion to Douglas on 1st down, Ryan finds Douglas again for 20 yards down to the 33 yard line. 3rd down from the 39 Ryan throw incomplete for White... But WAIT there is in fact laundry on the field! Defensive Pass Interference on Tracy Porter. Two plays later on 3rd down again Ryan find Weems for 11 yards and a 1st down. After a spike to stop the clock and 2 incompletions, Matt Bryant trots on the field and kicks the game tying field goal..

As they said on NFL BLITZ WE HAVE OVERTIME!!! Atlanta gets the ball at the 20. 1st and 10 Ryan to Douglas for 8 yards. 2nd and 2 Ryan has a man deep... Its Douglas.... but its under thrown and falls incomplete. 3rd and 2 Ryan's pass fell incomplete and the Falcons are forced to punt. Now the Saints get a turn 1st and 10 from the 27 Pierre Thomas takes the hand off and takes it 1 yard. 2nd and 9 Spoon and Nicholas swarm the ball carrier after a 7 yard pick up. 3rd and 2 Brees throws short to Sproles for a 1 yard gain. 3 and out! First and 10 Atlanta from the 20 Ryan throw another incompletion towards HD. 2nd and 10 Ryan finds Tony Gonzalez for a 9 yard completion. 3rd down and one Matt throws a short pass to Mike Cox, who is filling in for Ovie after suffering an season ending injury, who appears to have the first down until the play is reversed. NO GAIN. Now it’s fourth down, decisions.... decisions...  You go for it twice earlier and you make it so why not... Falcons line up with Turner in the back field. HUT!!! Ryan hands the ball to Turner and...... He is STUFFED for no gain... Turnover on downs. Saints go on to kick the game winning field goal. (23-26)

Offense

What can I say; they came out and played the type of game we all expected them to play. Run, play action, short passes to open up the longer passes down the field, and they did just that. Matt Ryan threw a career high 52 passes which in most people’s opinion was about 20-25 to many attempts for the QB who people believe to have a weak arm and the stats do prove it to be the case (the too many throws part). As a pro the Falcons are 1-10 when Matt attempts 40 or more throws, the one win came last year versus the Ravens when Matt Ryan threw the game winning Touchdown to Roddy White as the defender fell down and White jogged into the end zone. I on the other hand don't feel there is a suck thing as too many throw for a QB, you brought him in to throw the ball and manage the offense and put you in the best position to win at the end of a ball game, and if someone was to tell you that Matt Ryan doesn't do that then they do not watch the Atlanta Falcons play.

Maybe no one noticed the 10 defenders....
However, the jury is still out with the call on fourth down in overtime. Let me elaborate, I don't have a problem with going for it on fourth down, I have a problem with the play call on fourth down. On fourth down the Falcons line up in the exact same formation as they did on fourth down earlier in the game that gained them 5 yards and run the exact same play. My first issue with that is, this is the NFL not some back yard pickup game in somebody's neighborhood, and secondly this is the New Orleans Saints not the scrubs in that aforementioned neighborhood who is going to fall for the same play twice in the same game and lastly my third issue with that play call is all season Falcons have been playing numbers football if there is more than 7 or 8 defenders in the box you check to a pass, if there is less than 6 or 7 you run the football. On this particular play there are 10 Saints in the box so why did Matt not check to a pass, it cant be because he doesn't have control to change the play call and it’s not as if he doesn't have the authority to do so, this to me is one of the world’s greatest mysteries.

As many fans and experts alike have been crying the Falcons play calling is predictable and has been for some time. I have to agree, when coming into a game against Atlanta you should already know that we are going to run the ball and use play action that's fine, but in that situation I would have like to have seen something less predictable, maybe something like that toss play ran against Detroit to pick up a first down at the end of the game. That would have made more sense being that the entire line was marched back into Turner who used his second effort to get back to the line of scrimmage. I feel it was a good gamble by Mike Smith but not a good play call by Mike Mularkey and an even worse decision by Matt Ryan not to audible or check to something that made a little more sense.

Offensive Notables and Player of The Week

As said before Matt Ryan threw 52 passes, completed 29 of them for 351 yards 2 touchdowns and 1 interception. Atlanta also ran the ball 32 times for 138 yards with the bulk the carries going to Turner with 22 touches 94 yards and a hefty 4.4 yard per carry average.  Harry Douglas (who came in after Julio Jones re-injured that hamstring) had a monster performance receiving recording a career high 8 receptions for 133 yards, another career high. Tony Gonzalez does what he does with catches for 71 yards and the touchdown to get Atlanta back into the game late in the fourth quarter. Then there is Roddy White, who has completely disappeared this season and played uncharacteristically poorly as well with 62 yards on 4 catches. At one point in this game Roddy White had more penalties and yards than he had receptions and receiving yards which is not what you want from your top wide receiver anytime during the season but most importantly not when your team is battling the for first place in the division. At some point you are going to have to stop jaw jacking off the field and produce between the lines on Sunday and needless to say fans are waiting for that moment.

Player of the Week: Harry Douglas- 8 receptions 133 yards, 16.6 per catch 14 Targets, and 3 yards rushing on a reverse.

Defense

Then there is defense. The Falcons defenses is coming to life late in the season and make no bones about it, all of the fans are taking notice. After earlier in the year Atlanta fan were turning the channels on their TVs when the defense came on the field. Last in 3rd downs, couldn't tackle, bad coverage, zero pass rush. Its almost like a different group and please note the ALMOST. Sunday against New Orleans, Atlanta only allowed the Saints and its high powered offense to convert only 4 third downs out of 13 and when they did tackle they all swarmed to the ball to prevent any second effort yards for the backs and receivers. They did, however, have a problem with coverage on two plays but before I go there let me start on the defensive line, Where in the world is the push up front? There is no excuse for the QB to have all day to stand in the pocket and let a tight ended run from one side of the field to the other to be wide open without so much as a body around Drew Brees's feet, it’s unacceptable. Especially when you have Abraham, Babineaux, Edwards and Peters down in the trenches. There needs to be improvement and quickly.

Back to the first blown overage,  I'm assuming Thomas DeCoud  was suppose to be covering Jimmy Graham and for whatever reason he was late on the coverage and it turned into a 29 yard gain. Earlier in the season you were placed in a weekly competition for your job and I don't think that you would want to pick a game that would place your team as the front runner to start slacking in coverage. Don't get me wrong I like DeCoud and I feel as a DB who isn't afraid to lay a hit on someone is a rarity but they are about as use full as a QB who can’t read a defense. You have to be able to cover as a defensive back and if you can’t you will find yourself on the wrong side of a call asking you to bring your play book with you into the personnel office. The second blown coverage was worse than the first one, it happened right after the 29 yard reception. As a fan I would rather have one player come out and take the blame than have 3 players all looking around wondering who was suppose to back covering that guy. That like the defensive line not getting any pressure is unacceptable and is an epic fail on the defensive side of the ball.

Don't get me wrong and don't let that persuade you into thinking that Falcons played a bad game on defense. The actually did well against the Saints. Holding the offense to 363 yards including only allowing 41 rushing yards the entire game between 3 running backs and most shockingly limiting Darren Sproles to 1 rushing yard and 2 receiving yards. The Falcons maybe shaky against the pass but against the run they are anything but. Atlanta has not allowed a running back to reach 100 yards in 13 games dating back to last season however this was the first time in 27 games the Falcons as a team did not force at least one turnover bringing 1 of three streaks to a end versus the Saints.

Defensive Notables and Player of the Week

Who else but Curtis Lofton leading the team in tackles again this game with 9 total tackles, followed by Thomas DeCoud with 7 total tackles and all solo I might add and then 3rd Sean Weatherspoon with 6 of his own. This is great news to see an linebacker atop the stats in tackles because it wasn't too long ago the team lead tackler was a DB, which either means there was some aggressive backs on the defense or the linebackers were not playing well, and I’ll give you a hint it isn't the first one. The Falcons didn't register a sack this game and only posted 2 quarterback hits the entire game and 5 tackles for loss which are not numbers to be proud of by any means necessary.

Player of the Week: Curtis Lofton- 9 tackles 6 solo and 1 tackle for loss

Preview

Up Next on Atlanta's guest list is the Tennessee Titans. The Titans have been up and down this year, after losing its first game to Jacksonville; they 3 off three straight wins then dropped two and won two of their last 3 and sit 5-4 on the season. Last week behind Chris Johnson's 130 yards, the league’s worst rushing offense man handled the Panthers and look to let Johnson loose against the Falcons defense. Atlanta has never beaten the Titans, and this will be the first time they have seen Johnson, who missed all the off season due to a contract dispute. If Atlanta wants to win they are going to have to bring that top 5 rushing defense and play solid coverage to send the Titans back to Tennessee with a loss and get the Falcons back on the road to the playoffs.

11-6: Falcons Beat Up On Colts

Falcons Say No Payton....
NO PROBLEM!
Hope you’re all well rested after a bye week. Feels like it been ages since I posted, well it has. It was defiantly a long week here at Savannah State. The end of the semester is always the hardest part of the year, but nevertheless I’m back and ready to get things done for you Falcons fans and avid readers of the WEDATNATION column. I must be honest, it was kind of hard for me not to look past this game to next week’s opponent, the Falcons versus the Colts (without Payton Manning) wasn't a "sexy" game to watch, unless you’re a Falcons Fan, which in turn means you love the fact that Atlanta went in and blew out the winless Colts. Unfortunately that makes for a relatively short post this week, with that said let’s get into the recap!

RECAP
Alright we start the game with the Colts at the Indianapolis 24. 2nd and 6, Curtis Painter (filling in for the injured Kerry Collins, who is filling in for the injured Payton Manning) hands the ball to Delone Carter up the middle and on the second play of the game, and his second carry, he FUMBLES (Curtis Lofton) and its...... FALCONS FOOTBALL! Recovered by Ray Edwards. On walks the Falcons offense. 1st and 10 from the 26, the work horse, Michael Turner pounds it up the middle for an 8 yard gain. Two plays later its POP QUIZZ, around the left side for 11 yards. Let me just tell you this young man out of Oregon is a ball player, he is small, fast, and if you watched the end other game against Detroit he carried half the defense to pick up the game winning first down, so there is no doubt that he is powerful. Two plays later Turner pushes it in for a 1 yard TOUCHDOWN!!! (0-7)

On the next Colts drive, 1st and 10 Donald Brown, takes the handoff up the middle for 6 yards. Second and 4, Painter finds Manning’s best friend Dallas Clark for a 9 yard reception. The Colts seem to be getting on a bit of a roll, because two plays later Painter hits Pierre Garcon down the right sideline for a 15 yard completion and it appears the Falcons are back on their heels. After two Painter incompletion, 3rd down and 10 fires a pass DEEEEEP for Reggie Wayne and its PICKED OFF!!! By ex-Indianapolis Colt Kelvin Hayden, who was released by the Colts this off season in a salary cap related move and was signed by the Falcons back in August. The Falcons and Colts exchange punts and the Falcons come back on the field at their own 21 yard line.

Mike Smith didnt like the Celebration after Julio
Jones (11) caught his first TD.
1st and 10 from the 21 Turner takes the ball 15 yards up the middle of the field to the 36. After that it’s all JULIO JONES. 1st and ten from the 36, after missing the past two games with a pulled hamstring Jones takes the reverse hand off around the right side for 14 yards to the 50. One thing about watching this speedster from Alabama run the ball you notice he gets north and south in a hurry and when he is coming you better get out of his way or you might have foot prints on your chest, and that’s not something normally said about a wide receiver. On the next play of the drive Matt Ryan lines up in the shotgun with Turner at his side, straight drop and LAUNCHES the ball about 60 yards in the air (so much for that weak arm rumor) into to triple coverage, who cares? Not Julio because he makes a spectacular diving catch into the end zone which was ruled incomplete and out comes the challenge flag. The call is reversed, meaning... TOUCHDOWN JULIO JONES!!! His first touchdown catch of his career. (0-14) See The Catch Here

Headed into the second quarter after a Colts punt, the Falcons have the ball with a lot of field between them and the end zone 87 yards to be exact. Let me tell ya, if you had went to the restroom, or looked down to check your phone you would have missed this entire drive. 1st and 10 from the 13, Turner again takes the ball up the middle of the Indianapolis defense for a short 3 yard pick up. Second and 7, in a run formation, Turner tries the right side and gets another short gain this time for 4 yards. 3rd down and 3 yards, Ryan is in the shotgun and fires a short pass looking to pick up the easy first down, but apparently he and rookie receiver Jones weren’t on the same page. Julio was looking for more....Julio Jones takes the 5 yard slant pass, shakes off the cornerback at the 30, puts a nasty move on the safety at the 40, by time he was at the 50 he had completely out ran the entire Colts defense and from the 45 yard line he watched himself on the big screen cruise into the end zone for his second TOUCHDOWN of the day and second of his career. (0-21) Jones At It Again

The Falcons Defense is playing an amazing game, and forces another punt. If the Colts don’t have anything else they have a great punter, he BOOMS this thing 53 yards and pins the Falcons at the 1 yard line. First and 10 falcons hand the ball to Jason Snelling to pick up 1 yard. The offense has been playing a near perfect game on offense up until this point until second and 9 from the 2, Matt Ryan fires a pass behind Roddy White and it’s intercepted by Jarrod Powers, which gets returned for a 6 yard touchdown. (7-21) Later in an interview Head Coach Mike Smith called it miscommunication on the part of Ryan and White, but in the end it still resulted in Matt's ninth interception of the Season.

We pick things up on the sixth play of the Falcons second drive the half. Matt tosses a 11 yard pass to Tony Gonzalez. 3rd and 9, Ryan looks and finds Roddy White for a gain of 10 yards down and a FALCONS FIRST DOWN to the Colts 2 yard line. Two plays later Ryan connects with Gonzalez for the 1 yard TOUCHDOWN, his 93 td catch of his career. To give the Falcons a 21 point lead. Early in the fourth quarter Matt Bryant, we should start calling him "Mr. Clutch" because this guy has hit all 12 of his field goals this season and is 185 of 221 in his career, that’s over 83 percent for all of you Non-Math Majors out there, comes on an knocks in a 20 yarder to push the score to its final. (7-31) ATLANTA (5-3) has now won 3 straight and are right in the thick of things in the NFC South.

Offense

After a week off this offense came out on fire, not that a short field didn’t help, but I must say that after missing a whole offseason, and not working together as a complete team until August, They have got it rolling. Missing Julio Jones for two weeks forced the Falcons into running the ball first to set up the pass, and many, including myself, wondered if they would continue to follow the trend when Jones returned to the lineup. Needless to say they silenced the critics at least for one week.

Up in Indianapolis, Atlanta ran the ball over 40 times, and averaged 4 yards per rush, with production like that in the running game Ryan only had to drop back 24 times, completing 14 of the attempts. The early season culprit was the offensive line, in this game they only allowed one sack and two QB hits, so not only is the offense getting on the same page but the offensive line is also returning to the 2010 from with is great if your Matt Ryan, Michael Turner, Jason Snelling and Jacquizz Rodgers. Turner only rushed for 71 yards but that's not because the Colts shut him down, its because the lead was so large the coaches felt they could rest him after the 3rd quarter. That's huge because of the next team they face, the Falcons are going to need a well rested Turner. The only knock on the Falcons Offense during this game was the interception, which is only an issue because it was returned for a touchdown. Ryan isn’t having his best season but that’s no excuse for you and your number one receiver to not be on the same page that close to your own end zone.
Offensive Notables and Player of the Week

Turner carried the ball 19 times this game for 71 yards and 1 touchdown, that’s 3.7 yards per carry. As I previously stated Turner only played 3 quarters, which means Jacquizz Rodgers (44 yards) and Jason Snelling (15 yards) got to have a little fun with 18 combined carries for 59 yards. Roddy Whites receptions maybe down this season but it’s clear that he is still Ryan's favorite receiver, he had 4 receptions for 76 yards and no touchdowns but was targeted a team high 9 times, but this was The Julio Jones Show on Sunday. The young receiver caught only 3 balls this week but showed the fans in Atlanta, the critic on the social media sites, the analyst on the sports stations and a certain Head Coach in New England why the 21 spot jump on draft day was small price to pay for a receiver with the amount of talent he has. Jones, made a diving grab between 3 Colts defenders for a 50 yard touchdown (the first of his career) then later flashed his speed as he outran the defense and took a 5 yard slant pass 80 yards for his second score of the day. But Jones isn’t just a pass catcher; he apparently is really good out of the reverse, so good that the Falcons ran two reverses with Julio that averaged 16.5 yards a piece. If this Falcons offense is starting to click with Julio Jones in the lineup, look out because you’re going to need 12 defenders to stop them down the road.

Player of the Week: Julio Jones- 3 Receptions 131 yards 43.7 per catch 2 TD's 2 Carries 33 yards 16.5 per carry. What more can I say, if the rookie QB class leaps and bounds above where many projected, Jones would the top choice for R.O.Y.

Defense

I don’t really have much to say on the defense, which is a good thing in this case. Like the offense, the defense is also starting to roll, and roll over opposing offenses as well. Against the Colts, the defense posted a shutout. Not only was it a shutout but they only gave up 186 yards of total offense to Indianapolis. Early in the season the Falcons had some third down troubles with getting the opposing teams off the field, but over the last two games this defense has gotten off the field 21 times of the 26 times of being in third down situations that's over 80% of the time. They are not giving up the big plays, forcing turnovers (making this the 28th game in a row that the team has taken the ball away) and are getting off the field on 3rd down. If they can keep playing at this level they could finish this season as one of the top defensive units in the league.
Defensive Notables and Player of the Week

If you’re expecting to see a name atop the defensive statics this week that isn’t Sean Weatherspoon or Curtis Lofton then I hate to disappoint you. Curtis Lofton lead the team with 12 total tackles and Spoon is right behind him with 10 of his own. These two young linebackers are both having the type of season that will land them both in Honolulu come February, if they don’t make it back to Lucas Oil Stadium. Curtis Lofton forced a turnover on the second play of the game and at one point Weatherspoon completely took over a series and single handedly booted the Colts off the field.

I love when a player goes back to the team he previously played for and has an impact in helping his current team win the game and Kelvin Hayden did just that. 3rd on the team in tackles this game with 7 he also had an interception making it two on the season and its starting to look like he has a strong hold on that nickel back spot over Christopher Owens who has missed some time with a concussion. Because Smitty doesn’t have a policy where you can’t lose your job during an injury I don’t see Owens coming in and out right taking it back. It’s nice to note that Babineax is having an impact after injuring his knee in week one, reports are saying he getting comfortable playing with a brace and its starting to look like it, also Corey Peters is having a good season as well and along with Bab is pushing the pocket and getting sacks.

What is Reggie Wayne looking at? Apparently the fans are
not the only ones who cant stand to watch.

Player of the Week: Kelvin Hayden- 7 tackles 5 solo 1 Interception. As I said, when you play against your former team you want to have an impact and he defiantly did on Sunday.

Preview

This week’s game is the game of the season for the Falcons when they face the New Orleans Saints in a battle for 1st place in the South. This is the first time the teams have played since the Saints posed for pictures on the Falcons logo after winning on Monday Night last season. The Saints (6-3) are coming off a win against the Buccaneers and look to keep things rolling with that high powered offense lead by Drew Brees and a monster at Tight End Jimmy Graham. If the Falcons want to reclaim the Crown of Division Leaders, Turner is going to have pound the Saints Defense and keep Brees on the sideline. Also the defense is going to have to continue playing the way they have in recent weeks and not get caught up in trying to do to much. This has to be approached as just another game on the road to repeating as Division Champions.
